While you wait — what to do

   Shut off the main water valve

   Usually near the water meter or where the main line enters the house.

   Turn off the water heater

   If you've shut off the main, also kill power/gas to the water heater.

3. 3

   Open faucets to drain the lines

   Reduces pressure and minimizes additional flooding.

4. 4

   Move valuables off the floor

   Especially anything in the affected room.
